When they were teens, Castor McCormick was the bane of Blake Kowalski’s existence. Their mutual animosity led to summers filled with rivalry. Now, nearly two decades later, Cas is moving back into the neighborhood to live in his grandmother’s old house. Blake tells himself he isn’t interested in seeing how snarky little Cas grew up, but when his mother dupes him into visiting his former nemesis, he finds out “pretty” can evolve into “sexy as hell” on the right man.

Cas didn’t think he wanted to see Blake again. No one has ever pushed his buttons like the arrogant boy he remembers from their youth. Turns out, the adult version of Blake still gets him hot under the collar—and everywhere else. With Blake on leave from work to nurse an injured leg and Cas taking time to move and unpack, they form a tentative friendship that turns into a sexual affair neither man can deny. But when Cas’s job sends him out of state to deal with a difficult client, their new relationship will be tested, and if they fail, Blake’s broken leg might not be the only thing to end up scarred.

Backlist Spotlight & Audiobook Giveaway: One Small Thing

Hi, everyone! May the 4th be with you! ♥

may-the-4th-be-with-you

I know I said I’d be doing these on Sundays, but today, Star Wars Day, is a special for One Small Thing. See, one of our main characters, Erik, is Star Wars obsessed (to put it mildly). He loves the movies and uses them as a sort of therapy (if you’ve read the book, you’ll understand). As such, on the 3 year anniversary since One Small Thing was originally released, we thought it would be cool to spotlight the book!

I don’t know how it’s gone for MJ, who has a lot more solo titles out than I currently do, but One Small Thing has certainly been one of my most successful books to date. It all started when I had a random thought about a flamboyant young gay man who unexpectedly finds himself with a newborn. It went on from there and I bounced my ideas off MJ as I was planning. Originally, I had planned to write the story alone, but when I tried starting it in third person, it just wouldn’t flow. Eventually I decided I needed to switch it to first, but then I thought that alternating POVs would be best and I worried about being able to create two distinct first-person voices on my own. I was discussing with MJ and asked her if she wanted to come on board to help me write it, since we’d recently co-written Moonlight Becomes You, the first book in our “Lucky Moon” series. She said yes, and voila, here we are with One Small Thing. Even years later it remains near and dear to my heart.

To celebrate the anniversary, I’d like to give away another copy of the audiobook, which just came out last month.

Blurb:

“Daddy” is not a title Rue Murray wanted, but he never thought he’d have sex with a woman either. Now he’s the unwitting father of a newborn named Alice. Between bartending and cosmetology school, Rue doesn’t have time for babies, but he can’t give her up. What Rue needs is a babysitter, and he’s running out of options. He’s on the verge of quitting school to watch Alice himself when he remembers his reclusive new neighbor, Erik.

Erik Van Nuys is a sci-fi novelist with anxiety issues to spare. He doesn’t like people in general, and he likes babies even less. Still, with his royalties dwindling, he could use the extra cash. Reluctantly, he takes on the role of many – and even more reluctantly, he finds himself falling for Alice and her flamboyant father.

Rue and Erik are as different as two people can be, and Alice is the unlikeliest of babies, but Rue has never been happier than when Alice and Erik are by his side. At least, not until he receives an offer that puts all his dreams within reach and he’s forced to choose: the future he’s always wanted, or the family he thought he never did.

Backlist Spotlight: Love Rising

Hi, guys! It occurred to me that those of you who are new to my work might not have heard about some of my backlist titles. So, for the next month or two, I’ll be using Sundays to spotlight my older books.

Today is all about Love Rising.

A little background for this story. It started off as a birthday present for one of my friends. They’d posted prompts on their blog, asking if any of their author friends were willing to write a story as a gift. One of the prompts asked for mermen, and since I’ve always been a fan of The Little Mermaid, I took it on as a challenge to myself.

Love Rising is the result. It’s about Francis, a former indentured servant who escaped a master who tortured and abused him, and Wick, the merman he finds washed ashore. It’s set on Isla Sagrario, a fictional island, which was first mentioned by name in my pirate story, Black John (from the Dreamspinner Cross Bones anthology).

If you like mermen and fairytales, give it a shot! It features my favorite of all my covers so far, drawn by the fabulous and talented Anne Cain.

LoveRising - Anne Cain - 300x450

Blurb:

In the 1700s on the island of Sagrario, men who love other men find safe haven. For Francis Holland, an escaped indentured servant, Sagrario offers nothing but loneliness. His life begins to change when he finds Wick, a merman, washed ashore.

When Wick awakens under Francis’s care, Francis returns him to the sea at his request. Soon after, they begin to meet in secret, and gradually, Francis blossoms under this new companionship. However, a merman is a difficult creature to entrust one’s heart to. With one trapped on land and the other at sea, the differences in their species threaten to keep them apart forever. It may not be long before Wick is gone, taking Francis’s reason to smile with him.

Note: Set in the same world as my story, Black John, but can stand completely on its own. Black John does not have to be read prior to reading this one.

“Happy birthday, Mal.”

Despite being distracted by the sight in front of him, Malachi shivered at the whisper in his ear, the scrape of stubble on his skin, the warm, hard body against his back. He stood in the entryway to Aaron’s apartment—which typically exemplified the definition of “Spartan bachelor pad”—but tonight, it had been transformed into something magical. Candles of various sizes adorned every flat surface, casting a welcoming yellow glow. In the center of the living room lay a red and white tartan-patterned…

Garnet Evergreen has never heard of an elf abandoning the North Pole for a human, but he yearns to be the first. Ever since he saw Wes, the boy with sorrowful eyes, Garnet felt an undeniable kinship. Over the years, he’s watched that boy grow into a man, and now he’s determined to give Wes a Christmas he’ll never forget. If only Garnet had thought to test his father’s sleigh before leaving…

Orphaned as a child, Wes spends every Christmas alone at his cabin. When he’s woken by a suspicious boom and finds a wrecked sleigh and an unconscious elf, he doesn’t know how to react. Wes isn’t fanciful. He doesn’t give much credence to the stories about Santa Claus and flying reindeer. But a part of him wants desperately to believe when Garnet promises forever, even if life has taught him that no one ever stays…

Writing Update

Currently I’m working on the outline for my hedgehog shifter book. Those who’ve been following me for a while know this one has been a long time coming. I’m working on it with a coauthor who shall, for now, remain nameless, but we’re having a lot of fun plotting and look forward to starting very soon. Our hope at the moment is to have the book done by the end of the year or early next.

Also, MJ O’Shea and I are in the middle of revising Moonstruck for its eventual rerelease next year. It’ll be getting around 12K words, including both new scenes and extended ones and whatever other revisions we make to the original.

There are a couple of other projects I’m researching right now too. Exciting things are coming! Keep an eye on my blog or follow my newsletter to stay up to date on all my news.

Catch you later. ❤

Excerpt:

Blake’s mother didn’t live on a busy street, but being summer, the kids were out in full force. The occasional shout or burst of laughter broke the monotonous silence. And then there were the comings and goings of a certain new neighbor whom Blake had absolutely no interest in watching, even if he found his gaze frequently straying in that direction. He’d caught glimpses of the moving truck over the weekend, along with a dark blue Prius, which made him snort. No doubt the driver of a hybrid would hate his gas-guzzling Ford F-150. For some reason, it seemed fitting. He could picture the old Cas growing up into the tree-hugging, granola type.

Idly, he let himself wonder what the adult Cas might be like. When they’d first met as teenagers, the kid had reminded Blake of a scrappy little Irish chimney sweep, minus the accent. The pale skin, the freckles, that mop of messy dark hair. Put him in a newsboy cap and some wool trousers, and he could’ve been an extra in Oliver Twist. Blake had constantly ragged on him about it too. That is, until the following year, when postpuberty Cas showed up. Gone was the scrawny, gangly limbed half-pint from the previous summer. In his place stood a boy with the lithe, wiry body of a distance runner and a face like something out of a goddamn Botticelli painting. Only his smartass mouth had stopped Blake from falling to his knees in worship—though it certainly hadn’t prevented a wet dream or three.

Blake couldn’t lie. His mother’s mentions of Castor had made him curious despite himself. But he didn’t intend on giving in to her badgering about going over there. What the hell would he even say? Welcome to the neighborhood? Here’s a fruit basket. Let’s be friends? He could only imagine Cas slamming the door in his face in response. Blake chuckled and shook his head. Not going to happen. Not in a million years. No matter how much his mother pestered him.
